Assassin's Creed II

Posted on December 29 2009 at 09:40 PM

It's about time I make a return, and what better way to celebrate a late return with a late review. I hopped into the wonderful world of Assassin's Creed II to enjoy the feeling of shoving a blade attached to my wrist right into someones throat. I was a little nervous going into this one, especially considering the first one was a great experience that was ruined from a large number of things that ended with it being a chore. I'm glad to say that while the repetitive-ness is still there in the end, they mask it well enough you'll rarely know it.

Assassin's Creed II continues where the first one left off (It being a continous story, this tends to occur. Crazy concept I know). This time though, you escape and go to a hidden location where there is another animus which you use to go back to another ancestor to further your training as an assassin. The lucky ancestor is Ezio Auditorium- Er - How about we just go with Ezio.

The story is much more enjoyable than the original with twists and turns and things that had me saying "What a Tweest!" more than a normal person should in a single day. The graphics are great and stunning and the ability to run around venice is always fun.

There just isn't a whole lot to write about this game. I could go on about how the combat is fluidand rarely tiring, the missions are a good enough to keep you entertained, the side missions are no longer required or too repetitive but it just wouldn't be worth it. OK yes, there are a numerous amount of new weapons. New enemy types, new ways to hide, you no longer melt when touching water.

The only way to really review this is to review it as a sequel. It had everything good about the first game but ditched anything that wasn't enjoyable and added a bundle of new toys for you to play with that give it a new spin. So is it worth a purchase? Of course. It's what a sequel should become. An upgraded version of the original that not only fixes the broken, but makes it better and more enjoyable.

So yes. I completely reccomend the game to anyone that, at the very least, mildly enjoyed the first installment.

Halo ODST

Posted on September 26 2009 at 01:04 PM

I went into ODST giggling in excitement to be able to completely destroy the game in the worst possible way. Turns out that I didn't get that chance due to ODST not being all as bad as I originally intended. That doesn't make the game great but it did pass my standards for it and that gives it a unwilling thumbs up.

I'll get right to the point, that I'm sure a lot of others have stated by now as well. If you liked the past halo games you'll like this. Nothing has changed. Shields are replaced with "stamina" which is the equivalent of rechargeable shields. You use the same weapons (excluding the two new ones obviously). You even are still a mostly unstoppable bad ass going through countless numbers of enemies to achieve your goal.

I was actually rather let down by the fact there really wasn't any ability to sneak past enemies. What I mean is, yes technically you could sneak past enemies that are far away and facing the other direction - you could also do the same thing in the past halo games. Nothing has changed. While speaking about that, the walking around the city at night is a rather pointless addition only added to make the game longer. I'm not going to deny that it may, for some, add a new feeling into the game play but it's not different. You commonly just go back and fourth from one end to another just to start the next mission. To be perfectly honest, I thought finding the telephone when you first get out was the best part. You actually needed to find your way around the city for a short time.. Making it have a purpose. Just putting way-points on a map and saying "go here" isn't any less linear than GTA tends to be. The city directs you around, giving you clues where to go or where you should be. That's great let it stay like that. Giving us a map direct/straight forward map is giving us the ability to shun any hints given to us.

Just to make you feel like you're in a smaller GTA city there are mongooses available in a few little hidden places you unlock by getting audio files. The mongooses make it about three times easier to make it around the city. The audio files just let you experience what went on when the invasion on the city began. It's a rather cute story but at certain points I can't explain it but they made me cry how bad the voice acting was. Not everyone was bad, but certain parts were just awful.

I suppose I should talk about the individual missions just to hold back the waves of complaining masses if I didn't. The actual missions involve stepping in the shoes of one of your squad mates at different times after the drop. It commonly involves day time combat across the city with different goals. Mostly just trying to survive and find the rest of your squad. Going from a zoo, to across roof tops. I will give these missions something though. I actually enjoyed the bloody things (usually). Some of the cutscenes were great and showed how vulnerable (and apparently bad ass) the ODST are and can be. The issue being that doesn't actually show while playing the game. Yes even on the three missions I played on legendary so far (the final two missions as well as another random one) you still seem a little too bad ass for your title.

There's a lot I could go over but I just can't bring myself to do so. Is the game good? Yes. Is it great? Not really. It's nothing more than Halo 3 dressed up in a new outfit. Yes it's supposed to be an expansion but it was supposed to be a major difference in gameplay, it isn't.

To the point, if you thought the halo series campaign died a little after 2 and 3 were released like myself, at least give this a try (rent or borrow it off someone would probably work). If you found it completely eye clawing painful (also like myself, but I attempt to have an open mind to things that claim to be different) then don't bother. It's just the same game with nothing worth keeping it other than having the halo 3 multiplayer, including all maps, on one disk. That saves hard drive space and saves a halo 3 purchase if you never played it.

So what's my take on this? There are still a lot of things wrong with this game (many I didn't even bother going over) but for some reason I can't bring myself to call it bad. Maybe I'm just happy I'm not stuck playing as Master Chief. I suppose I may be a closet Halo lover who only claims to hate it to make myself feel better. Yeah that's it...I also have no hands, can melt faces off with my mind, like throwing kittens at old ladies, grow potatoes out of the vents in my walls, and get a willy from sticking pointy objects into my eyes.

For those of you dense folks, only two of those were true.

Toast had no intentions of making a list of all the bad things the game had at the time of writing this. Along with the good, that's a story for another day.

Average Box Art Collection

Posted on September 08 2009 at 09:05 PM

You've seen them come up on your favorite site every now and then. They compile a list of some of the best and/or worst in a certain category. A rather small yet major one that springs up occasionally is the infamous "Box Art" lists. Enough is enough. It's time for a small collection of some of the average box art that has been released over the years. Now sit back and enjoy.

Please note. This is a small collection and in no particular order. This is not based on how good or bad the actual game is. No matter how awful some of them may be. These are my choices and it doesn't matter what you would have chosen. You will more than likely notice that I tend to pick on how the name and the box relate. That's just how I've always poked at game boxes for the most part. There are quite a few exceptions to that but it's what I do.

Fable II

It isn't that this box art isn't good, in fact the art is rather decent and It's not hard on the eyes. The issue is we've seen this box art before. Re-using the same concept is not cool. Not cool at all. Try mixing things up a little more next time around and we'll talk.

Descent

Simplicity is always a great thing when doing artwork. It isn't busy, it gets the point across, and in some cases it's awesome to look at. The issue here is that it's too simple. We have two colors, and a ball in the center which I assume to be some form of planet or energy source. What it is doesn't quite concern me. The point being they get bonus points of the simplistic design yet lose points for the lack of helpfulness at showing the game.

Oni

It's rather obvious where I'm going with this. An picture of an anime girl whom I assume to be the main character. She has a large number of weapons and an abnormally large amount of clothing. Yet for some reason I can still hear the sounds of pants being undone. Generic anime chick aside it's on nothing more than a single color background. All they did to make this was take some art sent to them, copy/paste it, and call it a day. They still get points though - It's still a decent drawing that I will never be able to do.

Ninja Golf

While it's extremely obvious why this isn't a great box art I'll explain why it isn't bad. The name is ninja golf. What do I see in front of me? I see a ninja who is playing golf. That's great. It explains that we play golf as a ninja and the sword hints we do indeed use the sword for something. It goes with the title and that's fantastic. It's still not good due to well...just look at it.

Second Sight

While the actual image is great I don't actually understand the point. The game is called second sight. He looks like a person that is contemplating suicide, having a headache, or contemplating suicide due to a headache. Maybe he is sad? Not sure all I do know is that I see nothing at all related to seeing something for a second time. This is just one of those times when simplicity isn't the best way to go. There is some more little things they could have done to help express the box to go with the title of said game. It's not a bad box either way.

Halo 3

The fan-boys cometh...Joking aside the Halo 3 box art disgusts me. Not because it's bad. In fact it's pretty and it has a little "ok guys. This is the end of this" vibe to it. The issue with the box being that I'm tired of seeing master chief standing there. He's not even attempting to make a cool pose like the last two covers. This time he is standing there on what I assume to be a small slope of ground. If not, the marines have a new game called "Chief Tipping".

Resistance Fall of Man

Let's go through the steps for this one. There has obviously been some resistance of some sort in the general area. Good so far but here is the kicker. It's called 'Fall of Man' - I see no man. Unless that is the result of a large amount of inbreeding across the human race, I have the feeling it's an alien. Not matching the box with the name is something I pick at a lot, but how hard would it have been to just accurately place a human skull there? You still get the feeling that bad things have occurred and it's time to go find out what.

Super Star Wars

The good portion this box art has to offer is the fact that it is Star Wars. I'm actually just trying to find something good. Star Wars was a semi-good movie leading the cover to be semi-good (AKA average) by default. The problem stopping it from evolving in any form is that I see nothing super about it. Super star wars. So it's on the Super Nintendo? That's no excuse. I want to see something super that also relates to star wars. Possibly Darth Vader flying around in the Superman Pose while Ewoks ride flying unicorns.

Starcraft

I'm glad I can resist the urge of making another fanboy joke. That doesn't mean I'm not going to say it. Blizzard fanboy's, your torches and pitch forks are not welcome beyond this point. Please leave them in the plastic bins and continue through the scanners. So moving on to the actual box art there isn't much to say about this. It shows three faces of which I can assume to be some of the races/factions inside the game. If that is not correct I don't care it doesn't change the point. It's very simple and like I've said already simple is great, simple is fantastic. It's just some box art that I don't feel is fantastically awesome but it's obvious that it isn't flat ouf bad. It fits the perfect middle ground and nothing more.

The 7th Guest

So we get down to the last of this little collection of art. I mostly feel that they didn't actually try to do anything that creative. It's rather generic by today's standards to see a house on a cliff in the middle of no where. Having it appear mysterious is always an added requirement as well. The art is still good and that's where most of the box arts get their points. The art is important and always is but used in the wrong way and it's just a waste of time.

So there we have it. You can disagree with some of these all you want. That's fine it is your opinion. While your opinion is wrong here, there is no reason for you not to voice it. Expressing yourself is a vital point of today's social communication.

Even though it would be better if they could do it without being on the internet.
